welcome to
SCENIC PAINTERS STUDIO
We run short Scenic Painting and Scenic Art courses from our professional studio in Wickwar, South Gloucestershire. The courses have been running since 2009 and over that time hundreds of students have gained the skills needed to work in the worlds of stage and screen.
Our courses are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists; we have taught students from a diverse range of non-creative backgrounds as well as scenic professionals wanting to extend their skills. You will gain in-depth knowledge of materials used in film, TV, and for the stage; why each part of the industry differs, and what's used where. You will be taught by experienced scenic painters, who will be on hand throughout your training, and you will be advised on how to market your skills and how to find work.
Class numbers are small and we break down each process layer by layer so you leave with skills you are confident to use. We aim to provide a friendly and fun learning environment and welcome anyone wanting to train with us.

If still undecided having read our course descriptions please feel free to contact us and we can advise as to which course might be best suited for you.

about us
James Rowse of DAP Studio developed our courses whilst training his staff for scenic production work. James has many years of experience, initially working as a freelance scenic in the theatre, film and TV industries, and then running his own studio specialising in work for the stage.
Having over 35 years experience he has distilled his vast knowledge to create short, focused tuition without huge financial or time commitments.
The DAP Studio moved to Gloucestershire from London in 2021 and Caroline Pederick joined James to assist in the studio organisation and course delivery. She originally worked as a stained glass artist and tutor. She has painted scenery for West End and provincial productions as well as painting for TV projects. At present Caroline teaches elements of the courses and also runs the studio.

From April 2026 Caroline will take over the day to day running of the business and the majority of the teaching leaving James time to concentrate on other projects. He will still be an integral part of the finishes courses and lead the spray and scenic art courses.
Scenic Painters Studio will continue to run from the studio in Wickwar and James will develop Scenic Painters online www.scenicpainters.com/online_courses/
which are an excellent alternative for students unable to attend the studio.
